Tinnitus and Menopause - is there a link?
1st -7th February is Tinnitus Awareness Week.
Lots of women at menopause find that tinnitus becomes a problem BUT are the two things linked?
There hasn't been a direct link established BUT the increased chances of getting tinnitus at both menopause and pregnancy mean that hormonal changes could be a factor.
As oestrogen levels drop we lose some of its protection leaving us open to problems with our circulation, increased perception of pain, increased chances of migraines or headaches and being more prone to increases in stress hormones. Any of these changes could make tinnitus more likely.
Is it your medications? Over 200 medications have been linked to causing tinnitus especially at the start or once finished the course. Don't stop the medication, seek medical advice.
Could it just be age related? Sorry BUT the chances of getting tinnitus increase greatly with age!
How to manage it:
- remove possible irritants - caffeine, cigarettes, loud noises
- reduce alcohol - alcohol can increase blood flow to ears and can make condition worse
- reduce stress - stress hormones seem to make things worse
- low level white noise. Tinnitus is more noticeable when it is quiet
- work on your sleep. If you have tinnitus you are more likely to have difficulties falling asleep but this can make your tinnitus worse the next day. Explore meditations and sleep apps
- keep doing the things you love
Tinnitus is an indication of an underlying health condition. Aging, ear injury or circulatory problems. If you are suffering with tinnitus you need to get the exact course established by your GP.
